The process typically includes initial assessments, structured observations, detailed feedback, and a comprehensive written report, along with guidance on next steps and further support where needed.

Speech and Language Therapy

Speech and language therapy supports children who experience difficulties with communication. This may include challenges with speaking clearly, understanding language, expressing themselves, and developing social communication skills. It can also support feeding and swallowing where needed.
A Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) is a qualified professional who assesses and supports children and adults with speech, language, communication, and swallowing needs. They work closely with families, carers, and other professionals to provide personalised support. In the UK, Speech and Language Therapists are regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and are members of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT), ensuring high standards of care and professional practice.
Speech and language therapy can benefit children who have difficulties with speech, language, communication, or swallowing. This may include children with speech delays, unclear speech, language difficulties, or social communication challenges. Therapy also supports parents, carers, and professionals by providing practical strategies to help children communicate more effectively in everyday situations.
We support a wide range of speech, language, and communication needs in children, including: ● Autism and social communication differences ● Speech delay and speech sound disorders ● Language difficulties and Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) ● Stammering (stuttering) ● Situational mutism ● Voice disorders
Every child develops at their own pace, but there are some signs that may suggest your child could benefit from speech and language support. You might notice: ● Not combining words by around age 2–3 ● Difficulty interacting with other children ● Frustration when trying to communicate ● Difficulty understanding instructions ● Limited vocabulary for their age ● Difficulty pronouncing sounds clearly If you have any concerns, it's always worth seeking advice early. Early support can make a meaningful difference to your child's communication and confidence.
Speech and language therapy can begin as early as 18 months, or even sooner if there are concerns around feeding or communication. Early support can make a real difference, helping children build skills, gain confidence, and make steady progress.
During an assessment, your therapist will take the time to understand your child's communication needs in a supportive and relaxed environment. This will usually include: ● A discussion about your child's development and a detailed case history ● Observing your child's speech, language, and communication through informal methods such as play-based activities ● If needed, the use of formal, standardised assessment tools You'll receive clear feedback at the end of the session, along with practical recommendations and next steps.
Therapy sessions are designed to be engaging, meaningful, and enjoyable for your child. Activities are tailored to their age, interests, and individual needs, often using a play-based approach to support learning and development. Parents or carers are encouraged to be involved in sessions, so you can learn practical strategies to support your child's communication at home between appointments.
The length of therapy will depend on your child's individual needs. Some children may benefit from just a few sessions, while others may require ongoing support. Sessions are tailored to your child, with frequency and duration adjusted to ensure steady and meaningful progress.
Sessions can take place at home, in clinic, within your child's educational setting, or online. The location is chosen based on what works best for your child's needs and the type of support required, whether that's assessment, therapy, or training.
Yes, and it is strongly encouraged. Your child is more likely to make progress when strategies from therapy sessions are used in everyday routines and activities at home. Small, consistent support can make a meaningful difference to your child's communication and overall development.
Yes, you can. Early intervention is highly beneficial, and private therapy can complement NHS support without affecting your entitlement. Many families choose to access private support alongside NHS services to begin therapy sooner or receive additional guidance.
No, you do not need a GP referral. You can refer your child directly, and referrals are also welcomed from parents, carers, and professionals. If you're unsure whether speech and language therapy is right for your child, you're welcome to get in touch for advice.

Autism and Neurodiversity

Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference that affects how a person communicates, interacts socially, and experiences the world around them. Every child is unique, with their own strengths, differences, and ways of communicating.
Neurodiversity recognises and celebrates differences in how people's brains develop and work. This includes both neurotypical and neurodivergent individuals, such as those with autism, ADHD, or dyslexia. There is no single "normal" type of brain. Instead, neurodiversity focuses on understanding, acceptance, and support, rather than trying to change or "fix" differences.
Every child develops in their own way, but there are some signs that may suggest your child could be autistic. These can include: ● Delayed or limited speech and language ● Difficulty understanding social cues ● A preference for routines or repeating behaviours ● Difficulty coping with changes or transitions ● Strong or focused interests in specific topics ● Sensory sensitivities (e.g. to lights, sounds, or textures) If you recognise some of these signs, it may be helpful to seek advice. Support and understanding can make a meaningful difference to your child's development and wellbeing.
A multidisciplinary autism assessment involves a team of professionals working together to build a clear and well-rounded understanding of your child's needs. This may include a psychologist, paediatrician, speech and language therapist, occupational therapist, or other specialists. The assessment looks at areas such as communication, social interaction, behaviour, and sensory processing. It follows recognised guidelines, including NICE guidance and DSM-5 criteria, to provide an accurate diagnosis and help guide appropriate support.
Yes, speech and language therapy can support children with autism in developing communication, social interaction, and functional language skills. Parent and carer involvement is an important part of this process, helping to reinforce strategies at home and share them with your child's educational setting and other professionals involved.
We work in collaboration with independent providers to offer multidisciplinary autism assessments. We guide families through each step of the process, ensuring it feels clear, supportive, and centred around your child's needs.
You can get in touch with Beyond Words to begin the referral process by filling out our contact form or sending us an email. We will guide you through the next steps and answer any questions you may have along the way.
